Income Tax Assistance

The Dayton Christian Center will kick off its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program beginning Tuesday, Feb. 16. The service will be located at the Dayton Christian Center Administrative Offices, 1352 Riverview Ave, five-blocks west off of North Broadway street in Dayton.  Tax services  will be free of charge and available to as many individuals as possible. Through March 12, 2010 – Shoe Drive for Haiti

For the Love of Children (FLOC) is having a shoe drive for Haiti, which ends March 12th.  Shoes of any size may be donated.  To schedule a drop off or pickup time, contact Sherri at 681-6343.

Through April 29, 2010 – Free Health Screenings

A free health screening will be held at STUDIO Zumba Fitness every Thursday from noon to 2:30 pm through April 29th.  Sports Medicine students from the Miami Valley Career Technology Center, guided by their instructors, will conduct the tests to measure heart disease risk factors. There will be a three minute cardio step test to help determine your cardio-respiratory endurance.  You can also get your Resting Heart Rate (RHR) tested along with your Resting Blood Pressure (RBP) and Body Mass Index (BMI). March 9, 2010 – Alzheimer’s Association Presentation

Patricia Roby with the Alzheimer’s Association will provide information on the basics of Alzheimer’s and what to expect as the disease progresses. The presentation will take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, at the Huber Heights Senior Center located at 6428 Chambersburg Road in Huber Heights.  This event is open to seniors in the community.  For more information contact the senior center at 233-9999.

March 11, 2010 – Childhood Immunizations

The Sulphur Grove United Methodist Church is offering childhood immunizations slated for March 11th from 5 to 7 pm.  A registered nurse will administer the vaccines for children 18 and under.  Sulphur Grove Church is located at 7505 Taylorsville Road, just two blocks east of Brandt Pike in Huber Heights. March 11, 2010 – Antique Appraisal Day

Friendship Village will host an Antique Appraisal Day on Thursday, March 11th from 10:30 a.m to noon. An auctioneer will be on hand to appraise "auction value" of each piece. No jewelry or guns and please limit your antiques to 2 small items per person. March 12, 2010 – American Legion Post 707 Veterans Benefit

The Veterans of American Legion Post 707 in Englewood are hosting a steak dinner to benefit the Veterans in the Dayton V.A. Hospital. The dinner is set for Friday, March 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost will be $11 which will include steak, baked potato, salad, rolls and dessert. The public is welcome to attend.  The American Legion Post 707 is located at 200 National Road, 5 blocks west of North Main Street in Englewood.  For more information, contact the office at 832-0267‎.

March 13, 2010DDS Chili Cook-off

The Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities Services invites everyone to join in the fun and games at the Ninth Annual DDS Chili Cook-off. The event will be held Saturday, March 13, at the Coliseum, Montgomery County Fairgrounds, from 5 to 8 p.m.  Admission is $3 and $1 for kids and people with disabilities.  This year’s theme is the “BIG Bopper” and will feature oldies music, poodle skirts, dancing, fun, food, and door prizes galore. March 16, 2010 – UD Celebration of the Arts

The University of Dayton is holding a “Celebration of the Arts Performance” featuring inspiring and entertaining music, as well as dance and visual art, on Tuesday March 16th at the Schuster Center.  Admission is free but tickets are required and can be obtained by contacting the Kennedy Union Box office at 229-2545 The Schuster Center is located in Downtown Dayton at One West Second St just one block west of North Main St. For more information contact the Kennedy Union Box Office at 229-2545.

March 17, 2010 – Aviation Heritage Speaker Series

The Aviation Heritage Speaker Series offers the public a variety of speakers addressing topics related to aviation history through engaging discussion and first-hand accounts.  This month, former Dayton Daily News aviation writer and author Timothy Gaffney will discuss Dayton’s air show history.  The program will held on Wednesday March 17th at 7 pm at the Engineers Club located at 110 East Monument Avenue, three-blocks west of North Patterson Blvd in Dayton.  The program is free and open to the public.  For more information contact the office at 228-2148.

March 19, 2010 – UD Theatre Musical

The University of Dayton’s theatre program is excited to present the Tony Award-winning hit musical, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”.   This play is a hilarious tale of overachievers angst chronicling the experience of six adolescent outsiders vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime.  In the process they learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser.  The performances will be held on March 19th thru the 20th and 25th thru the 27th beginning at 8 pm, at the Kennedy Union Boll Theatre located at 300 College Park Avenue off of East Stewart street on the University of Dayton campus.   General admission tickets are $10 for the public and $6 for UD faculty, students and staff.  Contact the box office for more information at 229-2545. 

March 22, 2010Corigliano Quartet Performance

The Corigliano Quartet will perform live at  8 p.m. on Monday March 22nd at the Sears Recital Hall on the University of Dayton’s campus.  Named in honor of the Pulitzer Prize-winning American composer John Corigliano, this accomplished string quartet has won the acclaim of audiences and critics across the country.  Dedicated to presenting new American music as well as the standard repertoire.  General admission tickets are $14; $8 for seniors, University faculty, staff and alumni, and non-University of Dayton students, $5 for University of Dayton students. March 27, 2010 – Easter Egg Hunt

There will be a community Egg Hunt on Saturday March 27th from 1 to 2 pm at the First Christian Church located at 6114 Fishburg Road in Huber Heights.  The Egg Hunt will begin at 1:00 pm for children walking age to third grade.  Crafts and refreshments will be provided for everyone.  For more information contact the church office at 236-8029 or visit their website at www.fcchh.org. 

March 27, 2010 – Business Women’s Association

The Bur Oak Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will hold their 7th annual Super Soup, Salad, Shop, & Style Show fundraiser on Saturday March 27th from 11 am until 3 pm.  The proceeds from this event will be used by the Bur Oak Chapter to fund continuing education of its members as well as scholarships for women in the community looking to advance their education and their career. March 27, 2010 – Healthy Kids Day

The YMCA, in partnership with the Sulpher Grove United Methodist Church, is pleased to announce the fifth annual Healthy Kids Day and Easter Eggstravaganza on Saturday March 27th from 5:30 and 7:30 pm.  The purpose of the event is to provide families with a fun day of activities designed to teach children about the importance of exercise and nutrition.  The Huber Heights YMCA is located at 7251 Shull Road, west of Brandt Pike across from Carriage Hill Park.  For more information contact the YMCA at 236-9622.

March 27, 2010 – Tenth Life Benefit

The Tenth Life is holding a dinner and auction to raise funds for its “no kill” cat shelter. The complete spaghetti dinner is only $8 per person.  Live and silent auctions will be held throughout the evening, offering a wide selection of antiques, gifts, and collectables.  This fundraiser for the Tenth Life will be on March 27th from 4 to 8pm at the Routsong Funeral Home at 2100 East Stroop Road in Kettering.  For more information, call 376-5550.

April 16, 2010 – Knights of Columbus Fish Fry

The local Council of the Knights of Columbus will be holding a Fish Fry April 16th, at their “Hall” located at 4293 Powell Road, west off Troy Pike.  Some of the best Fish Fry food and fun in town will be served from 6 to 9 PM with entertainment lasting until 11 PM.  Cost per person is only $10.00 for adults and $5 dollars for kids.  For more information call Bob at 233-1711.

April 24, 2010Senior Center Bazaar / Garage Sale

The Huber Heights Senior Center will hold a combination bazaar and garage sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 24. The Senior Center is located at 6428 Chambersburg Road in Huber Heights.   Please call 233-2279 if you are interested in renting a table to sell your items.

May 7, 2010 – Caring For Youth Centennial Gala

The “Caring For Youth” Centennial Gala will be held May 7th from 5 to 11 pm at the Mandalay Banquet Center.  The gala will feature a cocktail reception, cash bar, silent auction, dinner and live entertainment including an after dinner dance.  The Master of Ceremony will be WDTN’s Channel Two Morning Host Dan Edwards.  Music will be provided by Khalid Moss. May 14-15, 2010 – Relay for Life

The Eighth Annual 23 hour Relay For Life of Huber Heights is set for May 14-15 at the Heidkamp Stadium located at Wayne High School, 5400 Chambersburg road in Huber Heights.  Opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 14th.  Anyone can participate in the Relay For Life, including families, friends, and sports teams.  All proceeds raised will go toward the American Cancer Society.  To register, contact Sarah at 888 -227-6446 ext 4217.   For more information visit the web site at Relayforlife.org.
