Alanon

 

Do you love someone who drinks too much? Come be with people who understand.  Alanon is there to help and support spouses, relatives, and friends of people with an addiction to alcohol.  Meetings are held at 7 p.m. on Thursdays at Brookhaven Nursing and Care Center (the building with a clock tower), 1 Country Lane, Brookville, Ohio (just off Brookville-Salem or Albert Road). American Legion Post 707 Meals

 

American Legion Post 707 located at 200 W. National Road, Englewood, offers Wednesday night meals from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.  Breakfast is also served every Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. The public is invited to join both meals. 

 

Camp Fire USA

 

Camp Fire USA, a nonprofit coed youth development agency providing year-round services in the greater Dayton area for 70 years, operates the Community Family Resource Center at 4301 Powell Road in Huber Heights.  After School Programs and Summer Day Camp are open to all children, ages 4 to 19.  Room rental for business or personal events is also available to the public.  For more information on Camp Fire USA, call 236-6115. 

 

Cincinnati Oldies and Doowop Association

 

Those who enjoy early rock and roll are invited to join the Cincinnati Oldies and Doowop Association, or CODA.  This group was created to promote, preserve, perform and play the greatest music ever recorded. Dayton Metro Library SCORE

 

The Dayton Metro Library offers a wide variety of free programs designed to help small businesses get started and thrive. The library continues its partnership with SCORE, a national nonprofit organization whose volunteers are retired or working business owners, executives and corporate leaders. SCORE counselors provide free and confidential advice at all stages of developing and running a small business during individual drop-in counseling sessions at the Main Library, 215 E. Third St., Dayton. Sessions are available on a first-come, first-served basis the first Thursday of each month, 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. on the library’s first floor. DivorceCare

 

DivorceCare is a weekly seminar and support group for people who are separated or divorced offered each Sunday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Christian Life Center, 3489 Little York Road. Essential Tremor Support Group

 

The Cincinnati/Dayton Essential Tremor Support Group meets the second Sunday of each month at Kettering/Sycamore Hospital on Leiter Road, Miamisburg at 2 pm in Dining Room No. 2. The group shares ideas on how to cope with everyday living with a tremor. Guest speakers are scheduled every other month. There is no charge. Free Mammograms

 

The Dayton Metro Library is partnering with Cancer Family Care to offer free mammograms to women without insurance.  A mobile mammogram unit will be at the following branches from 9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.:

Parenting with Love and Logic

 

“Parenting With Love and Logic” classes will be held at the Dayton  Catholic Social Services Family Center at 1046 Brown Street in Dayton.   The classes will run every Tuesday from March 3 through April 28 from  6:30 to 8:30 p.m. There is no charge for the classes but participants  are encouraged to purchase the workbook for $10. among participants.

 

Senior Transportation Program

 

Huber Heights residents, age 60 and up, may participate in a new senior transportation service sponsored by Goodwill Easter Seals. To enroll and make a reservation, please call the Huber Heights Senior Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 233-9999. There is one-time enrollment fee but no charge during the ride. Currently, trips are offered to Wal-Mart and Meijer.  Drivers are needed so that the service may expand to include medical appointments and other destinations. Sports Car Club

 

The Western Ohio Region of the Sports Car Club of America is inviting all auto sport enthusiasts to join them. A variety of auto events and activities, driver training classes, and company discounts are some of the benefits of the group. General meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 at the Christopher Club, 3150 S. Dixie in Kettering.

 

The Tenth Life

 

The Tenth Life is a no-kill cat care and adoption center located in Greene County. The cats live in a home environment, where they are fed the best food ad receive a great deal of attention from volunteers and visitors.  There is a full-time veterinarian to handle all of the medical needs and volunteers to manage all other duties.  The Tenth Life is funded through Combined Federal Campaign and United Way donations, private donations, and fund raisers.  All funds are used for the care of the cats.  Before being adopted, all cats are spayed or neutered, tested for Feline Leukemia and Feline AIDs, fully vaccinated, and microchipped.  The cats are available for adoption by appointment.  The adoption fee is sixty-five dollars.  If you would like to adopt one of these wonderful furry friends or would like more information, please call 376-5550. 

 

Walking Through Grief

 

"Walking Through Grief" is support group for those who have lost a spouse. Please feel free to join us on Tuesdays from 6:30-8pm at the Salem Church of God, 6500 Southway Rd in Clayton. Al-Anon

 

Al-Anon is a support group for family members and friends of alcoholics, whether still drinking or in recovery, rather than for alcoholics themselves.The Al-Anon Support Group meets every Friday at 8 pm at the Honey Creek Presbyterian Church at 212 W. Jefferson St, New Carlisle.

 

Blue Star Mothers Miami Valley Chapter 3 Collection

 

The Blue Star Mothers Miami Valley Chapter 3 is collecting items, cards, and donations for soldiers serving in Iraq and other areas overseas. Support is needed, especially for those soldiers not getting any support from home. Donations are being accepted at the dental office of Dr. Beverly Fanz located at 625 W. National Rd in Englewood.

Childhood Immunizations

Childhood immunizations are offered at no charge at outreach clinic sites to children of all ages by the Combined Health District of Montgomery County as part of the “KISS Your Child” Immunization Program. The goal of this program is to fully immunize 90% of all children under the age of two in Montgomery County. There are no family income requirements to receive immunizations and the vaccines are of highest quality.

Vaccines are available for all children age 18 and under. Parents or legal guardians must bring the child’s shot record and insurance card with them. No child will be turned away due to inability to pay. Childhood immunization clinics are held at the following locations:

·         The Sulphur Grove United Methodist Church, 7505 Taylorsville Rd., Huber Heights, on the second Thursday of each month from 5-7:00 p.m.

·         The Northridge Community Center, 5945 N Dixie Drive. The clinic will be held 3rd Thursday of each month from 4-6:00 p.m.

·         The Butler Township Fire Station at 3780 Little York Rd., Butler Township, on the first Tuesday of each month from 4-6:00 p.m.

·         The Riverside Municipal Building, 1791 Harshman Road, Riverside, on the fourth Thursday of each month from 5-7:00 p.m.

CPR, First Aid and Child/Babysitting Safety Classes

 

The Huber Heights Fire Division has a community education program offering classes in CPR, Basic First Aid, as well as Child and Babysitting Safety.  All classes are held at the Huber Heights fire station on Brandt Pike and Longford Road.  Call 233-1564 to more information, or to learn the dates and costs of these classes.

 

Dar a Luz Network

 

The North Dayton Chapter of Dar a Luz Network offers support and education for pregnant women and new mothers. This group meets the second Wednesday of every month at 10a.m at Shiloh Church, 5300 Philadelphia Dr., Dayton OH. Call 276-5808 for information.

 

Dayton Area Visually Impaired Persons

 

The Dayton Area Visually Impaired Persons is a support and advocacy organization for low-vision or blind individuals. Meetings are held on the third Saturday of each month at 1pm in the sixth floor conference room at Miami Valley Hospital, 1 Wyoming St.  Call 285-0009 for more information.

 

Enon Emergency Relief

 

Enon Emergency Relief manages the registration and distribution of a monthly box of USDA surplus food to senior citizens 60 years of age and older living in the Greenon School District. To be eligible for this Commodity Supplemental Food Program a single person’s monthly income must be less than $1,062 and that of a couple less than $1,430.

 

The food boxes are distributed each month to registered people at the Enon Emergency Relief Pantry, located at 105 N. Scott St. To learn more about the program and how to register for it, please call 864-7117.

Feed The Hungry Food Pantry

The “Feed The Hungry” food pantry is now open at the Destiny Christian center. Anyone in need can get groceries from the pantry every Thursday from 10am to noon. Destiny Christian Center is located at 4691 Bufort Road in Huber Heights. For more information, call 236-2021.

 

Free Clothing Closet

 

Free clothing is available the second Saturday of each month from 9 a.m.- noon at the Free Clothing Closet, a service of the Community United Methodist Church, at 339 Meyer Avenue in Riverside.  Call 253-5169 for more information.

Free Mammograms

The Cancer Prevention Institute offers free mammograms at several locations in the Miami Valley. Women age 40 and older may be eligible to make an appointment. For more information, call 297-6971.

Help the Community Blood Center

The Community Blood Center invites you to become a Gift of Life Donor. If you are at least 17 years old, weigh more than 110 pounds, and are in good physical health – you are probably qualified to donate blood. The Community Blood Center has blood drives scheduled in Huber Heights and Vandalia. For more information, call them at 461-3450.

 

Huber Heights Dog Tags

 

The City of Huber Heights is selling dog tags for 2008. Each tag costs $16.75, payable in cash only. They will be sold from 8-4:30 Monday through Friday and the Huber Heights City Hall, 6131 Taylorsville Rd.

 

LifeTalk

 

LifeTalk is a support group for adults who have known incarceration and wish to grow and rise beyond it. Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of every month from 7:15-8:45 pm. at the Otterbein United Methodist Church, 111 Xenia Avenue and Keowee in Dayton. Memories of Mother

 

Hospice of Dayton is offering grief support for those who are grieving the loss of their mother. “Memories of Mother” is an education and support group that is open to the public and meets the first and third Tuesday of every month from 6-7:30 pm. Miami County Immunizations

The Miami County Health District offers Pediatric Immunizations every Thursday at their clinic in Troy. Parents may get more information on this service, or make an appointment by calling 440-5420. The Miami County Health District Pediatric Clinic operates every Thursday from 8:00-11:00 AM and 4:00-6:30PM at 510 West Water Street Suite 130 in Troy.

 

“Mingle With Our Mutts”

 

Looking for a loving addition to your family? The Animal Resource Center of Montgomery County holds “Mingle With Our Mutts” events as an educational way for people to visit with the animals, and learn more about various breeds. Parents of Children With Special Needs or Disabilities Support Group

 

Parents of children with special needs or disabilities can join a support group offered by the Huber Heights YMCA. The group meets the first Thursday of each month at the Y, located at 7251 Shull Rd. Call Bryan Maciukiewicz at 236-9622 for details.

 

Panic & Anxiety Support Group Meetings

St Peter Food Pantry

 

Since October 1996, the St. Peter Food Pantry has helped over 300 needy families in our community. Their mission is to provide food to people during a time of need.  The Food Pantry is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. for needy families or individuals residing in the 45424 Zip Code area. Families are able to come to the pantry once every other month for as long as needed to receive non-perishable food items enough for up to four days.  To receive food, bring a photo ID, proof of residency and some personal information will be required. The Food Pantry is a non-denominational program hosted by St. Peter Catholic Church, 6161 Chambersburg Rd. in Huber Heights.  For more information, call 233-1503.

Meet the Superintendent

Superintendent William Kirby of the Huber Heights City Schools has set time each week for meetings with the public. They take place each Thursday from 4 to 6 pm, excepting the night of school board meetings, and are held in the administration office behind Studebaker School, 5954 Longford Road. Senior Citizen Activities

Beavercreek Senior Adult Center

The Beavercreek Senior Adult Center offers membership to those age 55 and older.  Activities offered include exercise classes, line dancing, weight loss classes, monthly speakers, bridge, euchre, bingo and a travel club.  The Center is open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 7 pm, Friday from 9 am to 4 pm., and Saturday from 9 am to 12 noon.  For more information on membership or events, visit the Beavercreek Senior Adult Center at 3868 Dayton-Xenia Road, or call them at 426-6166.

Blood Pressure Checks

Elderly United Euchre Games

Seniors age 55 and up are welcome to join the Elderly United Euchre games every Tuesday from 1-3 pm. at the Enon-Mad River Township Fire-EMS Station, 260 E. Main St. in Enon.

Elderly United Meals for Seniors

The Elderly United Meals for Seniors are held at 11:15a.m. Monday- Friday, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 200 E. Lake Ave, in New Carlisle.  This program is for those age 60 and older.  Call for van pick up and reservations 323-9688.

Fairborn Senior Center Activities

Fairborn Senior Center offers a wide variety of activities for all interests. Card games, dance classes, Red Hat Society, exercise opportunities, and social events. The Fairborn Senior Center is located at 325 N. Third St in Fairborn. For details, call 878-4141.

Fairborn Senior Center Homemaker Department

The Fairborn Senior Center Homemaker Dept is expanding their service area to include Beavercreek, Xenia, Enon, New Carlisle, Huber Heights, and Medway. Seniors over 60 may be eligible for basic homemaker services. The cost of services is billed on an hourly rate, and time and days are flexible. Fairborn Senior Center Support Groups

The Fairborn Senior Center hosts regular support group meetings for citizens dealing with various issues. Diabetes, Parkinsons, MS, and Alzheimers are only a few of the groups that are here to help you. You do not have to be a member to participate. The Fairborn Senior Center is located at 325 N. Friend Trips

Goodwill Easter Seals is establishing a senior transportation program in Huber Heights called Friend Trips. Drivers are always needed and welcome, and need to be at least 25 years old. For information on becoming a volunteer driver, please contact Marty 461-4800 ext. 371.

 

Grandparents Support Group

The AARP sponsored free tax preparation will be offered on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Huber Heights Senior Center.  Some Wednesday evening appointments may be scheduled. Shut-ins may call to leave a name and phone number and a tax preparer will contact you. Tax returns will also be prepared at the Huber Heights Library on Monday afternoons.  Appointments can be made by calling 233-9999.

Huber Heights Senior Center

The Huber Heights Senior Center at 6428 Chambersburg Road in Huber Heights is the place to be for members of the community aged 50 and older. Activities include woodcarving exercise classes, computer classes, bingo, cards, travel, aerobics, a book group, speakers and health screenings. For more information, give them a call at 233-9999.

The Huber Heights Senior Center is the site for the Congregate Meal Program sponsored by Senior Resource Connection. Lunch is served from 11:30AM to 12:15PM on Wednesdays and Fridays and is open to the public. A $2.00 donation is suggested for those aged 60 and up. Those under 60 are required to pay $4.65 unless certain eligibility requirements are met. Please call the center at 233-9999 by 12:30 the day before the meal to make a reservation or to cancel. The Huber Heights Senior Center is site to apply for a Golden Buckeye Card if you are an Ohio resident and at least 60 years old. Proof of age must be shown and the application must be filled out at the Senior Center. Those under 60 are eligible if documentation of perminant and total disability is supplied. The Huber Heights Senior Center is offering assistance in completing simple wills, living wills, help power of attorney and general power of attorney. This assistance is provided by Legal Aid of Western Ohio and is available at the Senior Center at 6428 Chambersburg Road. To make an appointment call 1-888-534-1432.This service is available to residents of Montgomery and Greene County who are at least 60 years old

Huber Heights Senior Center Blood Pressure and Blood Sugar Level Checks

Once a month, the Huber Heights Senior Center offers blood pressure and blood sugar level checks by a nurse from Springcreek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  No fasting is required.  This service is open to seniors in the community at no charge.  To find out the date and time of the next free blood pressure and blood sugar level check, stop in at the Huber Heights Senior Center, 6428 Chambersburg Road (east of Brandt Pike) or call them at 233-9999.

Huber Heights Senior Center Computer Courses

Several hands-on computer courses are offered throughout the year at the Huber Heights Senior Center. Huber Heights Senior Center Hearing Check Screening Day

On the second Thursday of every month, there is a hearing check screening day at the Huber Heights Senior Center.  The Fairborn Hearing Clinic is providing this service.  A basic hearing screening is conducted and hearing aids are examined.  Minor repairs may be made on site. Multiple Sclerosis Support Group

Seniors and Scouts

The Beavercreek Senior Citizens Center is developing an ongoing Seniors and Scouting Collaboration. The generations have much to offer each other. This program is designed to bring Scouting youth and Seniors together to help each other with household chores, mentoring, and earning scout badges. Vandalia Senior Center

The Vandalia Senior Center offers a wide range of activities for people age 55 and older. Activities include weekly card games, non-credit college courses, exercise classes, crafts, crochet, ceramics, legal aid, health screening, travel programs, potluck dinners and much more. City Council Meetings

The Cities of Huber Heights, Tipp City, and Vandalia all have regular City Council meetings open to the public.

  • The Huber Heights City Council meets at 7pm on the second and fourth Mondays of each month (except the 4th Monday of December) at City Hall, 6131 Taylorsville Rd. For more information, go to their web site.
  • The City Council for Tipp City meets the first and third Monday of each month. Meetings begin at 7:30 p.m. in Council Chambers in the Tipp City Government Center, 260 S. Garber Drive. For more information, go to the city’s web site.

MetroParks

Adult Walk

Join in for the Tuesday Morning Adult Walk at Eastwood MetroPark. Every Tuesday at 9 a.m., there is a 1-1/2 hr walk which will search for evidence of wildlife in this natural oasis. Walker may bring binoculars. The Tuesday morning adult walk starts at 9am every week at the Eastwood MetroPark, 1385 Harshman Road. Meet at the first parking lot.

Educational Programs

The Five Rivers MetroParks system has an extensive educational program for pre-school and home-schooled children. These programs have dozens of subjects taught at the many MetroPark locations. Hiking

Five Rivers MetroParks have many hiking trails in their parks throughout Montgomery County. The “Hike For The Health of It” program has guided hikes most every weekend. Call 275-PARK for more information.

 

Youth/Family Activites

Community Family Center in Huber Heights

The Huber Heights Community Family Center is now open at 4301 Powell Road in Huber heights. This facility is run by Campfire USA. Campfire USA is a non-profit coeducational youth development agency that has been providing services to youth and their families in the greater Dayton area for more than 60 years. Huber Heights Library Yarn Matters

The Huber Heights Library invites the public to join Yarn Matters. The love of needle arts is all you need to participate. The group will meet from 6-7:30 on various Tuesdays. For dates and more information, call the Huber Heights library at 227-9508.

Life in the 1800s

Young people age 6 and older can experience part of life on the farm back in the late 1800s by helping out with the morning chores. Families can help the farmhand at Carriage Hill MetroPark at 8:30am on the third Saturday of each month. Carriage Hill MetroPark is at 7800 East Schull Road (near Brandt Pike). Miami Valley Astronomical Society

The Miami Valley Astronomical Society welcomes visitors to its monthly meetings at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. These free meeting are held on the 2nd Friday of each month  at 7:30 pm. The museum is located at 2600 DeWeese Pkwy in Dayton.  Visit www.mvas.org for more.

National Museum of the Air Force

There is always something exciting going on at the National Museum of the Air Force!  Every 3rd Saturday of the month is “Family Day” at the museum. SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park Family Days

Tecumseh YMCA Active Older Adults Class

The Tecumseh YMCA is offering an Active Older Adults class for those adults that would like to work on strength and flexibility. This is a very low impact class that utilizes a variety of equipment, and is designed to help with balance, bone density, flexibility, and overall agility.  The classes are free to Y members and are only $5.00 for non-members. Vandalia Recreation Center Birthday Parties

The Vandalia Recreation Center will help you put on a birthday party for your child that they will remember.  Each package includes use of the special events room and many of the facilities at the rec center.  The cost varies with each package.  For more information, or to reserve a date, visit the Vandalia Recreation Center at 1111 Stonequarry Road, or call them at 415-2340.

Winter Story Times 

The New Carlisle Public Library announces its winter story times. Teeny Tiny Tales will take place every other Wednesday at 10:30a.m., beginning Feb. 13 for babies up to age 18 months and an active caregiver. Wiggleworm Excerise Class will be held every other Wed. at 10:30 a.m. beginning Feb. 6 for children ages 3-7. The New Carlisle Public Library is located at 111. E. Dayton Foundation

The Dayton Foundation is looking for energetic volunteers for help with various administrative duties including copying, filing, and data entry. Occasional help with receptionist responsibilities also is needed. Volunteers are needed Monday – Friday between 8:30 and 5:30. Parking, training and orientation will be provided. Tipp City’s Needy Basket Food Pantry

Tipp City’s Needy Basket Food Pantry is looking for volunteers to help the organization serve residents of Tipp City, Bethel and Monroe Township.  They are located at 330 S Fifth Street in Tipp City.  For more information on volunteering for Needy Basket, call Gerry at 667-6489.

Vandalia-Butler Food Pantry

The Vandalia-Butler Food Pantry provides food to needy families in the community.  They are always interested in making contact with families that need help; and also are in need of donations to continue their mission.  The Vandalia-Butler Food Pantry can be contacted at 890-6628.

Dayton Area Boardgaming Club

The Dayton Area Boardgaming Club meets every month to play all sorts of strategy games, everything from chess to Carcassonne.  Bring your favorite, or try something new.  This event is free and open to the public. They meet the third Saturday of every month from Noon to 5:15 PM at the East Branch Library at 2008 Wyoming Street in Dayton.  For more information, call Dan Woodard at 258-3725.

 

Dayton Lacrosse Club

Euchre Tournament

HHAF Bingo

The Huber Heights Athletic Foundation will be hosting Wayne Bingo every Sat and Sunday at Huber Heights Athletic Foundation Center. 5367 Fishburg Road just west of Brandt Pike by the Post Office. Miami Valley Backgammon Club

The Miami Valley Backgammon Club welcomes all players to join monthly meetings. A tournament format is utilized with ˝ off entry fees for newcomers to our club. St. Peter's Bingo

St Peter’s Church at 6161 Chambersburg Road in Huber Heights has Bingo every Thursday evening. The public is invited. Bingo is held in Fehrenbach Hall located in the basement of the church starting at 7:00PM every Thursday evening. For more information call 233-1503.

Poetry Slam

The Dayton Poetry Slam and Sessions and open mic is your opportunity to express yourself in a free and open environment. Poetry of all types are welcome as is comedy, music or anything else you feel like bringing to the stage. The event is free and held every Tuesday night at 9:00 PM at the Oregon Express, 336 E. 5th Street, Downtown Dayton in the Oregon District.
